I'm a product designer with over 4 years of experience, and I've had the opportunity to work on different design projects. Before now, for every project I worked on, I had to build everything from scratch; style guides, components, widgets, entire screens, etc. It was around that time I got to know about design systems and how much of a lifesaver they were.
I knew I had to build one for myself, which I did; Here’s the story of the design system I built; "Luca", and how it changed my work process.
Luca is a design system built to improve and speed up my design process, it is costumed made for the kind of projects I mostly take on. The name “Luca”, was gotten from an animated character in a movie called Luca, whose innovative and creative spirit embodied what I needed the design system to accomplish.
The goal was to optimize speed and effectiveness, creating faster delivery time for my designs and easy handoff to engineers.
Design systems are living and there are currently the visual element and components on Luca, including; Colors, Typography, Icons, Input fields (form elements), spacing and Grids, alerts, avatars, elevations, buttons, and a whole lot of UI components.
It became obvious to me how time-consuming it was to create them from scratch every time and how much time I could save. The design system helped me;
Creating a design system would save me time and resources, and it has. It effectively cut down the time it took to accomplish tasks and innovate because it cut out the repetitive aspects. I could easily use the components that I had created before. Creating new things was also easier because I had a system to work with.
